“Get out the rye bread and the mustard, Grandma, it’s grand salami time!”
This famous grand slam call led Mariners fans to dangle logs of salami and loafs of bread in front of the broadcaster’s booth at the Kingdom.
This is just one of the many memories Dave Niehaus gave us. Because as a broadcaster, he didn’t simply deliver the play-by-play. He told stories.
Stories filled with humor and down-to-earth fun.
But how did a man who grew up in Princeton, Indiana become one of the most beloved broadcasters in the history of Major League Baseball? This is the story Billy Mac shares in his recently released biography, My Oh My: The Dave Niehaus Story.
Told in nine ‘innings,” the book starts with Dave as just a young boy, sitting in his living room listening to baseball on the radio. It follows him through is college years and early broadcasting career at Indiana University. It looks at his stints with the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service and the California Angels.
And of course, it explores his time with the Seattle Mariners, induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and final his passing in 2010.
Images from Dave’s life are interspersed throughout the book. So too are stories told by his wife and lifelong love, Marilyn.
