2015 Media Day Luncheon
Post game field reporter, Shannon Drayer
ROOT Sports TV game day host, Brad Adam
Seattle Times Mariners beat writer, Ryan Divish
Tacoma News Tribune columnist, Bob Dutton
Seattle Times columnist, Larry Stone
Radio broadcast voice of the Mariners, Rick Rizzs
Held at Safeco Field’s Club Level, members and guests had the opportunity to see field undergoing some off-season upgrades. (And, the huge 12 in the outfield. #GOHAWKS!)
Emceeing the luncheon, Rick Rizzs briefly introduced Shannon, Brad, Ryan, Bob and Larry. Then, he opened the floor to questions.
One member inquired about what would happen to the offense if Gutierrez came in at 100 percent? Ryan said, “A healthy Gutierrez is like a unicorn as far as I’m concerned. He has a disease. It limits him from being a day-to-day player anymore. I don’t think you can invest any time or energy in a guy who you can’t depend on.”
As for what the media crew expects from the Mariners this season? Expectations are high.
Shannon pointed out, “The commitment used to be to see if guys could make it at the Major League level. That’s not the commitment now. The commitment now is to make it to the post season.”
What kind of impact did Lloyd McClendon have on the Mariners? Bob said:
One of the things he brought to the club was his experience with the Tigers. He knew what it took to win. He was used to being in the post season. He kept this club together and I think he used the bullpen terrifically.
Rick added that, “Whatever success the Mariners had, [McClendon] was the common denominator. He demanded you show up every day and you work hard. Whatever kind of guy you were, he helped you be that kind of player.”
The “Wins” Prediction
Each year, we ask the media to predict the number of wins they expect. This is what they had to say:
Shannon – Shannon doesn’t believe in making predictions.
Brad – 88
Ryan – 90
Bob – Bob apparently agrees with Shannon
Larry – 88
RICK – 90+
